Foundation Phase (Gr 1-3)

The foundation phase of learning is key and at Lilyfontein we include academics, a wide variety of extra mural sports and the Adventure Programme to ensure a sound basis for growth

Lilyfontein Foundation Phase is a daily hive of activity with 6 classes and a total of about 140 children. The days begin with recognition of birthdays and sport / cultural achievements; outings and adventure days intersperse school routines and afternoons are filled with sport practices and matches.

The Foundation Phase comprises two classes in each grade from Grade 1 to Grade 3. Our classrooms lead onto the playground where the outdoors can be utilised as a classroom extension. At break time the children love playing on the wooden jungle gyms, the ‘Tarantula’ as well as on swings and other playground equipment.

Academically, we follow the CAPS curriculum as stipulated by the Department of Education. Foundation Phase subjects are: Home Language (English), First Additional Language (Afrikaans and Xhosa), Mathematics and Life Skills. The Life Skills programme includes Class Music, Art and Physical Education. Lilyfontein supplements the Life Skills by offering Computers, Perma Culture and Adventure Pursuits as part of our compulsory programme. Being an Eco school we incorporate caring for the environment in our lessons.

Our extra-mural programme includes mini-cricket, hardball cricket, tennis, netball, mini-hockey, rugby, drummies and adventure sport. Choir is offered to Grade 2 and 3 and we have a Grade 3 Marimba band. The programme is further supplemented by private coaches who offer tennis, swimming, karate and drama.

We are privileged to have smaller classes than many local schools which allows each learner to have an identity and gain recognition for his/her strengths. We offer Remedial Support in Foundation Phase.
